NTC Thermistor FAQs
Jul 26, 2022
Q: How responsive is NTC?
A: Response time is defined as the time it takes to reach 62% or a new temperature and is a function of mass. The smaller the sensor, the faster the response. Typical response time of NTC thermistor sensors is < 15 seconds.
Q: How stable is the NTC sensor?
A: Different sensor families have different stability ratings. Epoxy coated NTCs are less stable than sealed glass NTC sensors.
Q: How do I choose a resistor value for my application?
A: In general, use low resistance sensors for low temperature applications and high resistance sensors for high temperature applications. The goal is to have an operating resistance value within the temperature range you are interested in.
Q: Can NTC be used for cryogenic applications?
A: Yes, but at -200°C the accuracy is based on mathematical modeling.
Q: What is the difference between a thermistor and an RTD?
A: Each technique has its pros and cons, and which technique is best for a particular application will depend on a number of factors, including temperature range, desired accuracy, time response, cost, and many others.
